California

CA: I paid child support directly to my ex instead of the State Disbursement Unit. How do I get credit?

Quick answer

In many California cases, child support is meant to run through the State Disbursement Unit (SDU) so payments are tracked automatically. If you have been paying your ex directly, the good news is that direct payments can often still count, but only if you can prove them.

Why payments are routed through the State Disbursement Unit (SDU)

The State Disbursement Unit is a central processing center that receives child support payments and forwards them to the receiving parent. When payments run through it, the state keeps an official ledger of who paid what and when, which protects both parents.

Not every case is required to use the SDU. Cases handled through a Local Child Support Agency (LCSA) or with a wage assignment (an order sending support straight from a paycheck) usually go through the SDU. Some purely private cases between two parents do not. It helps to check your actual order and any paperwork you received to see what yours says.

Can direct payments still count?

Direct payments you made to the other parent can often be credited, but the burden is generally on the paying parent to prove those payments were made and were intended as child support. That is why documentation matters so much.

The risk with paying directly, especially in cash, is that without records the payments can later be disputed or treated as gifts rather than support. If the other parent agrees the payments were support, that agreement in writing goes a long way. If there is a disagreement, a judge decides based on the evidence in front of them.

Gather your proof before you do anything else

Pull together every record you have for the full period: bank statements, canceled checks, Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal histories, and any texts or emails where support amounts or dates were discussed. Organize them by date and total them up year by year.

A clear, chronological record of five years of payments is your strongest asset. Screenshots and printouts that show names, dates, and amounts are far more persuasive than memory alone.

Fixing it going forward

To correct the routing, you can contact your Local Child Support Agency or ask the court to confirm how payments should be made under your order. If your order requires the SDU, switching to that method going forward creates a clean, automatic record and removes the guesswork.

If there is any dispute about credit for past payments, you may need to file a request with the court to have those direct payments recognized. Because how credit is handled can vary by case, many parents in this spot talk to a family law attorney or their LCSA before filing, so they present the record the right way the first time.
